Holiday Puzzle #17 – Two Words in One

"In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: It goes on." - Robert Frost

In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life: It goes on.” – Robert Frost

Today’s puzzle is an original and interesting word puzzle. It’s based on homographs – words that are spelled the same but have different pronunciation and meaning. This is not to be confused with homonyms which are words that sound the same but are spelled differently, for example “write” and “right”. So we’re looking for one word with two meanings and pronunciations.

A good example of a homograph is the word wind. This can rhyme with “bind” as in “wind up the clock” or it can rhyme with the first syllable of “hinder” as in “it was a warm wind“. There we have it, one word with two meanings (that’s not uncommon) and two different pronuncitions (that’s more uncommon).

There are five puzzles below, each with two clues corresponding to a single word (a homograph) which will be pronounced differently for each clue. Think carefully to try to perfect your answers in order to achieve a perfect score! Good Luck!
